"O Bee Good" to the Bees

Happy spring!  It’s been a long, wet winter here in the Pacific Northwest and to celebrate the arrival of spring O Bee is offering free packets of wildflower seeds to one and all. Not only will these flower seeds add color and cheer to your garden, they are mixed to attract an assortment of winged visitors that will make your garden even more lush and beautiful.  “O Bee Happy” Wildflower seeds are specially packaged for us by Ed Hume Seeds, a family-run business located here in the Puget Sound area. The folks at Ed Hume know a lot about growing plants; that’s why they were among the first to offer a wildflower seed mixture designed to attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. These important pollinators are crucial to a healthy garden. Without them our food supply would have a lot less variety. A few examples of the foods that would no longer be available to us if bees ceased pollinating our crops include: broccoli, asparagus, cantaloupes, cucumbers, pumpkins, blueberries, watermelons, almonds, apples, cranberries, and cherries. But pollinator insects are in trouble. Their decline is due to overuse of garden chemicals, habitat loss, and pests like the varroa mite that preys on honey bees.

The good news is that many farmers and home gardeners are trying to help increase pollinator populations by planting flowers that attract bees and other beneficial garden visitors. Your packet of O Bee Happy wildflowers includes bee balm, blanket flower, butterfly milkweed, blue sage, California poppy, crimson clover, lacy phacelia, lance-leaf coreopsis, lemon mint, Mexican hat, partridge peas, perennial and annual lupine, purple coneflower, Rocky Mountain penstemon, and sunflower. A delicious mix sure to entice a number of pollinating guests to your garden.

Here’s a great tip we learned about planting wildflowers: sow the seed mix in a straight line with about eight inches between rows, you’ll be able to discern random weeds from emerging wildflowers. The straight line pattern disappears as the plants grow taller. We encourage you to celebrate spring, get out in the sunshine and spread some color in your garden. Keep your flowers and vegetables well pollinated with our wildflower mix. Come into any of the O Bee branches to get your sunflowers packs for your own garden and to share with friends. Enjoy your wildflowers!
