Sweepstakes Scams

Sweepstakes Scams

We all could use some extra money, and isn't it fun to win things? Unfortunately, scammers also know how exciting it is and use that feeling to trick people and commit fraud. By familiarizing yourself with the red flags associated with sweepstakes fraud, you can empower yourself to make informed decisions and shield your hard-earned money from falling into the wrong hands.

You Never Have to Send Money to Get Money
Many sweepstake scammers tell their victims that they must pay a large fee in advance to collect their winnings. If you're asked to pay for "free" money, chances are you won't see the money promised, but yours will be gone. Some fraudsters have also told victims they must pay their taxes before claiming their prize. The truth is, the government won't call you to demand money so you can collect a prize.

Scammers may also offer smaller prizes, such as household appliances, to entice you to fill out a form that will provide them with personal information they can use later, such as your date of birth or debit card number. You should never give personal information (outside of your name and contact information) to enter a contest.

You Won't Be Told to Keep It a Secret
Legitimate organizations and companies often run sweepstakes as part of promotional campaigns. Remember seeing those big Publisher's Clearing House checks on TV? Or the winners of McDonald's Monopoly? What legitimate company would keep a promotional campaign a secret? A representative of a real company might ask you for permission to use your photo for promotional purposes but not to keep your winnings a secret.

You Can't Win a Sweepstakes You Didn't Enter
You would likely know if you entered a sweepstakes with a large cash prize. If you are informed that you won a cash prize but don't recall entering the sweepstakes in the first place, pause and research to determine if the company even exists.

Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. If you believe you have been the victim of sweepstakes fraud, contact O Bee Credit Union as soon as possible at 360-943-0740.
