Government Impersonation

Government Impersonation Scams

You're going about your day when you receive a text message from the IRS. It says that you didn't correctly file your taxes, and if you don't contact them immediately, a warrant will be issued for your arrest. That would certainly be cause for alarm, but there's no need to panic. There is a strong likelihood that this is a scam.

Fraudsters can get quite creative when targeting their victims, even going so far as to impersonate government agencies like the IRS, Social Security Administration, or local law enforcement. They send emails, calls, texts, or messages on social media, asking for account numbers, personal information, or payments up front for taxes or fees. Often they will make threats, saying something bad will happen if you don't comply. Fraudsters go to great lengths to appear legitimate. They may know your full name or address, and the caller ID might even come up with the name of a familiar organization they claim to represent. Often, fraudsters will provide an employee ID or badge number to sound more official.

This may seem daunting, but there's no need to worry. Resources are available to help you stay knowledgeable and protect yourself. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) provides consumers with education and information to guard against unfair or deceptive business practices. Their website contains helpful information, including current fraud trends and scams.

Remember, the IRS (or any legitimate organization) will never contact you to ask for personal information or demand money, wires, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. They would also never make threats or promise a prize. If you suspect you have been contacted by a scammer, ignore the message, or hang up the phone. For more information or if you have been a victim of fraud or scam activity, visit and report at www.ftc.gov.
